Miami Fla Nov 30 2012 The family of a security guard shot and killed in aconfrontation with two veteran detectives outside his West Miami-Dade apartmenthave hired an attorney, claiming the Tuesday shooting was unjustified.And Wednesday night, Miami-Dade police released more detailsabout why police came to question Alexis Suarez, 47, and what led to the fatalshooting as his wife and stepdaughter stood nearby.
According to the new details, the roots of the incidentbegan long before the shooting. Police say Suarez, who worked as an unarmedsecurity guard for a private firm at
“Detectives had probable cause to arrest him in connectionwith an aggravated battery investigation where the victim was transported to alocal hospital due to the injuries he sustained,” Miami-Dade police spokesmanDetective Roy Rutland said in a statement.

“During the confrontation at Suarez’s residence, he was inpossession of a Smith & Wesson semi-automatic firearm which he raised atdetectives, forcing them to fire,”

Police said he possessed a concealed weapon permit. It’sunclear if Suarez fired any shots at the detectives.
The detectives involved in the shooting each have more than23 years of service with the departmentRutland said. Their names have not beenreleased.
Police said they found a ballistics vest in Reyes’possession, though it is unclear if he was wearing it.
John Rivera, president of the Miami-Dade chapter of thePolice Benevolent Association, confirmed that the two detectives fired.
Rivera said he spoke with the two officers after theshooting. Though he declined to give details, Rivera said that he believes “theevidence” will prove their actions were justified.
But Suarez’s wife and stepdaughter say police did not needto shoot Suarez, who was still inside his car when they confronted him.
“This is the biggest crime that I’ve ever seen,” adistraught Marisel Dieguez told Miami Herald news partner CBS4.
Suarez’s stepdaughter, Lilliana Marti, said officersoverreacted. “He didn’t even get the chance to do anything or get out of hiscar,” she said.
She said she filmed the shooting but said police confiscatedher cellphone.
The incident was the second police-involved shooting thisweek. On Sunday, one man was killed and a second hurt at Flea Market
