Southaven MS May 6 2012 Transition Planning Commission member Tommy Hart faces a charge of embezzlement in connection with missing prize money from the Southaven bowling center he owns.Hart, 72, of Collierville, a former member of the Shelby County Commission and the owner of Cotton Bowl Lanes Bowling Center on U.S. 51, was charged Friday by Southaven police. He remains in the DeSoto County jail and his bond has been set at $100,000.
Southaven Police Lt. Mark Little said a police investigation revealed that the bowling center has several leagues that play tournaments there. Each league puts in prize money for the tournament, and the bowling center holds the money until the tournaments conclude.
"When the leagues went to get the prize money, it was not there," Little said.
Little said it is an ongoing investigation and would not reveal how much money was taken.
"It was a substantial amount because there are five leagues who bowl there," he said.
Little added that Hart also owns a bowling center in Collierville, and he said police there have been notified about Hart's arrest and charges in Southaven.
Collierville Police Chief Larry Goodwin acknowledged that his department received a call from Southaven. At this time, he said, they have not received a complaint about the Collierville business.
According to his biography on the Transition Planning Commission website, Hart is a former member of the Shelby County Commission, once serving as its chairman.
He was the president and chief executive officer of Hart Manufacturing in Collierville and is current owner of Hart Properties Group.
Among his awards listed are Collierville Person of the Year 2004, the Silver Beaver Award from Chickasaw Council of Boy Scouts of America and past president of the Collierville Chamber of Commerce.
Hart was one of the Shelby County School Board's appointments to the TPC last September. He serves on the commission's Educational Services and Logistics committees.
